Saying "I'm busy" is something anyone can easily say. However, if we live without examining what keeps us so busy, the new year granted to us cannot truly be a gift. Time management remains at the very forefront of our attention in the new year because only when it is managed well can we live a life that pleases the Lord. The once best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, divides the things we do into four categories: 1) things that are important and urgent, 2) things that are important but not urgent, 3) things that are not important but urgent, and 4) things that are neither important nor urgent.
Living the life of a disciple who manages time well requires wisdom. If we look closely, anyone is compelled to do what is important and urgent. That is because it is not only essential, but it also approaches us with immediacy. Therefore, the area where wisdom must truly be exercised is in redeeming the time we spend on things that are not important but urgent, or on things that are neither important nor urgent. For instance, someone who enjoys watching weekday TV dramas may consider watching them not genuinely important, but urgent. Because once the broadcast passes they might miss it, they fall under the illusion that it is urgent. Moreover, doing things that are neither important nor urgent often involves indulging in mere whimsical desires or attending to trivial, hurried requests from others.
If we wish to make good use of our time, we need the discernment to identify the things belonging to the third and fourth categories, along with the resolve to say "No" to things that are not important. We must be able to say "No" to our own selfish desires, and we must also say "No" to requests from others—except for those we truly ought to take on. If we fail to learn how to say "No" to ourselves, we end up pursuing self-gratification instead of living according to our calling. If we do not learn to say "No" to others, we end up living by other people's requests rather than our own priorities. Hence comes the proverb, "The unemployed person is always the busiest." When we do not clearly grasp the truly important tasks of the day, we end up entangled in the busy requests that others bring to our door.
To a community called to live a transformed life in accordance with the new truth they believe, Paul challenges: "And find out what pleases the Lord" (Eph. 5:10). In doing so, he presents a life lived in the light, followed by an admonition to make wise use of time: "Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil" (Eph. 5:15–16). In this new year, I long to live in a brighter light, redeeming the time—all for the sake of pleasing the Lord even more.
