(The First International Congress on World Evangelization)는 1974년 스위스의 로잔에서 열린 개신교 보수주의인 복음주의 성향의 기독교 대회를 말합니다. (Let the earth hear His voice)는 주제로 토론을 했고 그 주제는 당시 남아공화국에서 유학을 하던 나에게 선명하게 다가왔습니다.

Familiar to some yet unfamiliar to others, the Lausanne Movement is a missional movement born with the vision of world evangelization. If one seeks a bit more background, Wikipedia provides helpful insight. According to it, The First International Congress on World Evangelization refers to the conservative Protestant, evangelical Christian gathering convened in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1974. Taking its name from the city where it first met, it came to be widely known as the Lausanne Movement or the Lausanne Congress. The chairman at the time was the American Baptist evangelist Billy Graham, and around 3,000 delegates from over 150 nations attended. The participants, who also gathered from the Third World, deliberated under the theme 'Let the earth hear His voice'—a theme that resonated vividly with me as I was studying abroad in South Africa at the time.

Meanwhile, the Second International Congress held in Manila, the Philippines, in 1989 passed by without much personal notice, as I had just planted a church in Jangseungbaegi, Seoul. However, when the Third International Congress took place in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2010, I not only had every reason to attend—having completed my studies in South Africa—but, as the senior pastor serving Ulsan Church, I also had the circumstances that allowed me to go. I fondly recall traveling there alongside several professors and pastors from the Kosin denomination. Today, the global CEO of the Lausanne Movement is Korean-American Michael Oh, while the Korea Lausanne Committee is chaired by Pastor Jaehoon Lee of Onnuri Church. Now, as the Fourth International Congress is being prepared for 2024 in Incheon, South Korea, the 2nd Lausanne Korean Pastors' Conference will be held at Maiim Vision Village from October 18 to 20 as part of that preparation.

To prepare for this, an orientation meeting for all speakers and facilitators was held via Zoom on Sunday evening, October 3, at 8:00 PM, offering a preview of the upcoming conference. Pastor Jaehoon Lee, Chairman of the Korea Lausanne Committee, will lead the opening service, and Pastor In-ho Lee will gracefully conclude with the closing service. On the afternoon of the first day, Dr. Christopher J. H. Wright will give a special lecture on 'The Lausanne Movement and the Korean Church,' followed the next afternoon by Pastor Sung-eun Choi speaking on John Stott. The first evening's panel discussion, titled 'The Lausanne Movement and the Mission of the Korean Church' (moderated by Professor Hyung-keun Choi, with panelists Pastor Jaehoon Lee, Pastor Kyu-hyun Lee, and others), and the second evening's panel discussion on 'The Lausanne Movement and Pastoral Ministry in the Korean Church' (moderated by Pastor Gap-shin Jung, with panelists Missionary Dae-heung Kim, Professor Bo-kyung Park, Pastor Jong-il Kim, and Missionary Deborah Jung) are being prepared. I will lead the Tuesday morning Bible exposition, and Pastor Jong-boo Hwa of Namseoul Church will lead the Wednesday morning Bible exposition. In addition, Missionary Chul-ho Han will speak Tuesday morning on the historical significance of the Lausanne Movement, and Director Jin-seok Byun will deliver a keynote lecture Wednesday on the missional church. Yet above all, the highlight of this conference will be the five small group discussion sessions. After all, everyone enjoys speaking much more than merely listening!^^

Being entrusted with the first Bible exposition brought back an old memory. During the Mission Korea '94 Conference, I was initially asked to preach four consecutive days on Romans 5, 6, 7, and 8. But perhaps thinking it was too much of a risk to entrust so much to an unknown pastor, the organizers eventually adjusted the plan so that I would take Romans 7 and 8, while Pastor Dong-won Lee, who was already well-known across the Korean church, would handle Romans 5 and 6. What truly astonished me in that moment was the realization that God knows absolutely everything. Had I taken the whole series alone as originally requested, I would have struggled immensely preparing chapters 5 and 6 from scratch. But when I was assigned chapters 7 and 8, I marveled: how did God know that I already had Romans 7 and 8 prepared? Of course, I knew theoretically that He is omniscient, but it was a chilling, unforgettable experiential encounter with His sovereignty. This time as well, as I weighed two potential passages in my heart, the text was confirmed as Colossians during our final meeting, and I thanked God—who knows me so intimately—for guiding me to Colossians. Would any of you like to participate in the Lausanne Korean Pastors' Conference? Where there is a will, a way will surely open!^^
Daarvolgens verwys die Eerste Internasionale Kongres oor Wêreldevangelisasie (The First International Congress on World Evangelization) na die konserwatief-Protestantse, evangelikale Christelike byeenkoms wat in 1974 in Lausanne, Switserland, gehou is.

Waar daar 'n wil is, sal daar beslis 'n weg wees!^^
