Six years and eight months after coming to Ulsan, I have gratefully been granted a long six-week sabbatical and am currently traveling. A few days ago, together with two other families, I visited Yosemite National Park near San Francisco for a four-day, three-night trip. Yosemite National Park is largely composed of massive granite mountains. Yet what deeply touched me was how vastly different the landscapes appear depending on the angle from which you look at those mountains.
Though the mountains neither change nor move, the realization that they present entirely different faces depending on where you stand to behold them prompted several reflections within me. Seen from one angle, a mountain might seem ordinary and uninspiring, yet from another angle, it reveals a breathless, awe-inspiring spectacle. Standing before this reality, I found myself thinking that the same holds true for how we perceive people and circumstances. It brought home anew the vital importance of the perspective through which I choose to view a person or a situation.
At times, the mountain stands on my right; at other times, it sits on my left. Clearly, it is not the mountain that has moved, but I who have changed my place. Yet without moving myself, I could never capture the other dimensions of that mountain. I realized afresh that whether we classify the very same person or situation as belonging on our left or on our right depends entirely upon where we ourselves stand. Circumstances, of course, are no different. The very same circumstance can be regarded as mere adversity, or it can be seen as a necessary stepping stone leading forward into something far better, despite present hardships. When we look at anything from God's perspective, it will always appear beautiful.
Please pray that through this six-week sabbatical, I may behold Ulsan Church from God's perspective and that this may be a blessed season of envisioning a renewed pastoral horizon. I firmly believe that when we come to view our lives and ministries through God's perspective, fresh horizons will open before us. I also pray that God will guide each and every one of you every Sunday with His blessed Word.
