Last Sunday at 3 PM, an evaluation meeting was held at 'Waters of Rest' to reflect on the short-term mission trips from this past summer. The meeting proceeded with video reports, ministry reports, financial reports, and a subsequent Q&A session. For the mission to Mongolia, Young Adults 1 took the lead with nine members including pastoral staff, joined by eight members from Galilee Church's youth group (also including staff) and the Mongolia New Life Training Team.
It is reported that there are currently about 350 Christian missionaries in Mongolia (180 Koreans and 170 foreigners), and short-term ministries are growing year by year. Around 3,000 people visited in 2001, but an estimated 15,000 went last year, and nearly 20,000 are estimated for this year. The Mongolia team reported that, centered around the church planted by Elder Bok-Man Choi in downtown Ulaanbaatar, they held Vacation Bible School for the Sunday school children in the mornings and conducted New Life Training for adults in the afternoons.
Next came the report from the High School Department's short-term mission to Oita, Japan. The polished video presentation and its rich content—including cultural exchanges with a local high school and a 'Korea Night' event hosted at a rented cultural center—moved the attendees deeply. Someone praised it highly, remarking that future short-term missions at Ulsan Church should follow the high school group’s model of thorough training, inspiring outcomes, and refined video reporting, setting a wonderful benchmark. It gave the attending elders a great sense of assurance that we can confidently send them out year after year.
For the short-term vision and exploration trip aimed at adopting the Kyrgyz people, a total of eleven members went—seven young adult women from Young Adults 2 and four mission committee members. In stark contrast to the stunning natural beauty shown on the video, it is a country where around 80 ethnic groups live under harsh, impoverished conditions. We are especially approaching the Naryn region in the Kyrgyz Republic with keen interest and prayer.
Finally, Deacon Jong-Woo Kim of Bubu Somang Dental Clinic and Deacon Jong-Soo Lim of Saehana Dental Clinic—both from our church and affiliated with the Ulsan Luke Society—shared a precious presentation using slides to introduce their ministry and the realities in Cambodia, which they visited during the Chuseok holiday. Listening to these short-term mission reports, which grow richer and more fruitful each year, I came away hoping that starting next year, we can evolve beyond concentrating our short-term missions solely in the summer, shifting toward sending teams throughout all four seasons.
