In the Old Testament book of Proverbs, the contrast between the foolish and the wise appears quite frequently. Each time, we are inclined to view the fool as someone other than ourselves and desire to place ourselves in the category of the wise. While that might be considered an application of the text, what is clear is that such an application offers little benefit to our lives. In the New Testament, in Ephesians 5:15 and following, Paul once again contrasts the unwise with the wise. No one would want to identify themselves with the foolish, yet we may also hesitate to readily identify ourselves with the wise. The issue is that, rather than relying on wishful thinking, we need to honestly face our actual thoughts and lives.
With what posture, then, are we truly living? In this year of our Lord 2015, thirty-eight days have already slipped by. How we plan and live out the remaining 327 days will determine whether we lead the wise life we desire. As we all believe and confess, a Christian is a person with a clear purpose in life. In the words of our Presbyterian forebears, we have the distinct purpose to "glorify God and enjoy Him forever." For this reason, we must pay careful attention to the time entrusted to us and put it to good use.
A wise person cherishes time and uses it rightly. It matters not only how much time we live for the Lord, but also whether we do God's will at the right moments. Therefore, we should meditate on the translation "redeem the time" alongside "buy up the opportunity." We must possess both the wisdom to secure time for the Lord and the wisdom to seize opportunities for Him. Using time qualitatively is just as vital as securing time quantitatively.
As the Lunar New Year approaches, it would be beneficial to reflect once again on living a wise life this new year—one that grasps the good pleasure of the Lord in every concrete moment of life. The reason people fail to live a rewarding day is not necessarily a lack of desire to spend time well. Rather, we need to examine ourselves to see if what we lack is the earnest desire to please the Lord day by day. If the desire to please the Lord dwells in our hearts, we ought to seek Him daily. Please remember that time is something given to us to manage, and managing it well is an art of living. Moreover, never forget that God, who created space and time, continues to create time. To utilize it creatively requires not merely time-management skills, but undeniably the fullness of the Holy Spirit. It is deeply meaningful, therefore, that the exhortation to "redeem the time" is followed by the command to "be filled with the Spirit." In other words, only when we are filled with the Holy Spirit can we use time in the most creative way. Though thirty-eight days of the new year have already passed, as we stand before another beginning with the Lunar New Year, my prayer is that this will be an opportunity for all of us to make a fresh commitment for the Lord.
