On an overseas study tour with the CBS Foundation Board of Trustees, we visited key Reformation sites across the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. In the UK, we focused mainly on Canterbury of the Anglican tradition and the footsteps of Wesley, the sacred roots of Methodism. In France, we toured the childhood home of John Calvin. And in Germany, with the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's Reformation approaching in 2017, we naturally retraced Luther's historic path. One morning after breakfast, I took an hour-long walk through the town for some exercise; seeing majestic church buildings towering every five hundred meters, I could tangibly feel the enduring influence of Luther even five centuries later.
Our guide, who hailed from Busan, had married a German and was raising two sons there, offered vivid insights into German society. In sharp contrast to our country, Germany does not have an after-work drinking culture; instead, hobbies and personal pursuits flourish. Because people truly enjoy private time after work, basic car maintenance is second nature to most, and many even build their own homes. Equipped with all manner of tools, when building a house they contract out only the foundational utilities and take about five years to finish the rest themselves as funds permit, naturally cultivating a deeply developed DIY culture.
Furthermore, about 75 percent of the population belongs to sports clubs. From early childhood, an active lifestyle filled with running, tumbling, and breaking a sweat is woven into the fabric of daily life. Jogging morning and evening, common throughout the Western world, is no exception in Germany. Hearing that Germany also boasts world-class levels of community volunteering left me feeling genuinely envious. During this trip, I personally witnessed on the streets thoroughly trained volunteers carrying out their regular duties. When children are asked about their dreams, the most common answer is to become a firefighter! I pray for a healthy society in our homeland as well, where children do not chase hollow, grandiose ambitions, but rather discover work suited to their gifts and meaningful ways to serve their communities. It is also worth remembering the saying that having just three percent of people leading forward is enough to build an effective society.
Moreover, following the nuclear disaster in Japan, Germany began phasing out its nuclear power plants and plans to shut them all down by 2020, transitioning steadily to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. It is truly a blessed nation that looks beyond immediate convenience and cares deeply for future generations and the environment. Hearing that in kindergartens, even if children occasionally squabble or scrape a knee, they are encouraged to play freely in nature—even heading out on rainy days to catch earthworms and get their hands and feet covered in mud—stirred deep compassion and prayer in my heart for the children of our own land. I learned that parents thoroughly cultivate character within the home for the true happiness of their children. While many churches and cathedrals in Britain and France stand hollow and empty, seeing congregations gather to worship on Sundays in Germany gave me an opportunity to reflect once more on the greatness of Luther.
