In the scripture passage from a couple of days ago, nestled between the plot to kill Jesus and the betrayal of Judas, lies the story of a beautiful woman. It begins: “A woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus' head.” As so often happens with good deeds, rather than rejoicing together, complaints erupt—such is the nature of this sinful world. They do not merely grumble; they go so far as to scold the woman harshly. Wicked people always consider themselves the measure of all things. Thus, instead of learning from her act and feeling ashamed of their own shortcomings, they seek to criticize and reprimand the other person.
Of course, they have their own rationale. “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor!” Pouring perfume on a young man's feet (and head) seems like sheer waste to them, and they propose what sounds like a much better use. “It could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor!” They are quick at calculation and clever at formulating alternatives. “That money could have been given to the poor!” In the end, her act of service becomes a target of public censure. Yet our Lord would never abandon His own in such a moment. “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.” Yes, indeed. That single word of His is more than enough.
Then the Lord dismantles their reasoning. “The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.” He pierces through their hypocrisy—pursuing their own self-serving desires inwardly while professing care for the poor with their lips. “The poor you will always have with you, and whenever you wish, you can do them good.” For this reason, God always leaves the poor among us, that we may have the privilege to serve them as if serving the Lord Himself. ‘Lord, in this coming Passion Week, we also wish to offer the cost of fasting one meal as an offering. May we give with a heart of sharing a meal with You, Lord, so that it may be used where it is truly needed.’
The poor are always with us, and we can help them whenever we set our hearts to it; but unlike them, our Lord was soon to leave this world. Therefore, her devotion was profoundly timely. “She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.” Truly so. How grateful we are that the Lord encouraged her and declared that she had devoted herself to a precious work far beyond what she could have ever fathomed! ‘In our lives as well, Lord, please accept the small things we do out of love for You as praiseworthy and precious devotion in Your sight.’ That alone would be overwhelming grace, yet the Lord further promises: “Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” ‘Yes, Amen, Lord! Receive all the glory for remembering and proclaiming the devotion of Your people in this way! Amen.’
Waarom val julle haar lastig?
Daarom was haar toewyding besonder tydig. ‘Ja, Here! Amen.’
