The cold that arrives before December makes us shrink back. As we pull our collars tight against the chilly wind, our hearts seem to close tightly without us even realizing it. Yet, when the cold sets in, there are always those who feel it even more intensely. Deeply moved by their suffering, a Salvation Army officer once hung a charity kettle in a bustling street and launched a fundraising campaign to help neighbors in need. Contemporary encyclopedias tell us that the very first chime of this kettle sounded in San Francisco as Christmas approached in 1891.
Faced with the challenge of feeding over a thousand people facing a sorrowful Christmas due to a sudden disaster that year, he wondered how to solve the problem until an ingenious idea came to him in prayer. It was an old traditional method once used in England to care for the poor. He went down to the Oakland pier, placed a large kitchen iron pot on a tripod, and hung a sign above it reading, “Keep the Pot Boiling.” Before long, he had gathered enough funds to serve a warm Christmas dinner to those in hardship—and that became the beginning of the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle.
The warm heart of an officer who prayed and agonized into the early morning hours to help impoverished neighbors now echoes deeply through our society in the ringing bells of the Salvation Army. We know that this sound revives in everyone the earnest need for neighborly love and contributes to building a beautiful society where all can thrive together. In that same spirit, several churches in the Ulsan area agreed this year to visit nearby traditional open markets. Through a flash mob in the local traditional markets where our churches reside, we plan to proclaim the good news of Christmas and hold an event to purchase essential goods, helping revitalize the local market.
Accordingly, this coming Saturday morning (the 16th) at 8:00 AM, our Ulsan Church will host a Christmas carol event to revitalize the traditional market at the “Old Station Market” located right across the street. Members of our church will browse and shop at the Old Station Market, and at the designated time, gather while singing carols. After about five minutes of caroling, everyone can purchase their groceries for the coming week before returning home. To let the merchants know that we are truly sharing the joy of Christmas with the citizens of Ulsan, it is vital that we actively purchase goods. Let us hold off on grocery shopping during the week and do it all at the market that day. Let us not only buy what was postponed, but even purchase a month's worth of supplies in advance, making it a day when our church repays our “debt” to the Old Station Market (구역전시장). After all, in the whole of South Korea, Ulsan Church is the only one blessed with such a permanent “district exhibition hall” (구역 전시-場) right on its doorstep!
