12년 전에 본당 예배실 리모델링하면 성도 여러분은 그 결과물로서 예배 실을 보지만 제가 기억하는 것은 그 과정입니다. 그 때도 우여곡절 끝에, 부산 성소건축의 대표님을 CM으로 모시고 직영을 했기에 몇몇 분들과 함께 많은 시간을 의논을 했던 과정을 아름다운 기억으로 갖고 있습니다. 모두들 자유롭게 자기 의견은 말하되 아무도 자기 생각을 주장하지 않고 들으면서 가장 합리적인 방안을 채택했던 과정을 떠올립니다. 말하자면 함께 일하는 기쁨을 맛본 리모델링 공사였습니다. 그 결과 지금 여러분이 앉아계신 아름다운 공간이 창출되었기에 그 이후에는 어떤 예배 공간을 보아도 더 이상 배고프지 않습니다. 앞선 세대들이 헌신해서 지은 골격이 워낙 좋아서 새 옷을 입혔을 때 모양이 돋보였기 때문입니다.
이번 공사도 그런 즐거움을 맛보고 있습니다. 지난 수요일 공간창출실행팀 15차 회의를 하고 목요일은 부산 벡스코에서 개최되는 경향 하우징 페어를 둘러보며 자재검토를 한 바 있습니다. 여러분도 하루하루가 다르게 일이 진척되는 것을 오늘도 예배하러 오시면서 확인하셨지요? 96 일 후 12월 12일로 예정된 공사가 끝나면, 가장 눈에 띄게 달라지는 것은 마당일 것입니다. 지금까지 명칭으로 부르면 “지하”식당이 더 이상 지하가 아니라 지상으로 드러날 것입니다. 식당문을 열고 나오면 바로 하늘을 바라보고 시원한 공기를 들여 마실 수 있는 파라솔과 테이블이 있는 안쪽 데크 마당이 나올 것입니다. 물론 그 한 쪽에는 누드 형 승강기가 울산교회 새로운 명물로 우뚝 자태를 들어낼 것입니다.
그리고 1, 2미터를 계단으로 올라오면 바깥쪽 마당이 나옵니다. 안쪽 데크 공간과 마당 사이에는 녹지공간이 있고, 바깥마당은 그 동안 한 줄로 심겨져 있던 나무들이 지그재그로 심기고 나무 주변에는 둥근 테이블과 벤치들이 자리 잡게 되고 나머지 모든 공간에는 붉은 색갈의 점토벽돌로 마감될 것입니다. 그리고 중요한 것은 지금 길에서 계단을 통해 올라오는 높이가 사라지고 샬롬주차장, 차도의 높이로 마당이 낮아질 것입니다. 그래서 계단을 오르내리기 힘든 어르신들이 경사로를 통해서 내려가서 식당 바닥 높이와 동일한 승강기 연결통로에서 바로 2층 예배실로 들어오실 수 있습니다.
일반 성도들의 입장에서 보면 늘 1층 로비로 들어오시는 대로 들어오시면 됩니다. 다만 그동안 1층 로비에 발을 들여놓기 전에 답답하게 시선과 발걸음을 막고 있던 승강기가 사라져서 시원하게 넓어진 로비를 대하게 될 것입니다. 지금보다 몇 배 넓어지고 밝아진 로비에서 성도들과 반갑게 인사를 주고받는 역할을 감당할만한 공간이 확보됩니다. 그리고 왼편으로 뚫린 복도 안쪽에 위치한 사무실은 바깥쪽으로 나오게 되고 복도 오른 편에는 영유아부실은 위치는 동일하되 새로운 단장을 하고, 복도 안쪽 편 계단은 반분해서 경사로와 계단으로 나뉘고, 현재 회의실이라는 이름으로 통하기도 주일에는 재정부실로 사용되던 오른쪽 마지막 공간은 베이비시터, 탁아부로 변신합니다. 그리고 복도 왼편 첫 방은 사무실, 나머지 공간은 모자실이 자리합니다. 계속 기도의 지원을 부탁합니다. 아자~ 아자~~
When looking back at the remodeling of the main sanctuary twelve years ago, the congregation sees the finished sanctuary, but what I remember most is the journey. Even then, after many twists and turns, we invited the CEO of Busan Seongso Architecture as our construction manager and managed the project directly, and I cherish the beautiful memories of spending countless hours in discussion with several individuals. I fondly recall how everyone freely expressed their opinions yet humbly listened rather than insisting on their own ideas, ultimately adopting the most reasonable solutions. In short, it was a remodeling project where we truly tasted the joy of working together. As a result, the beautiful space where you sit today was created, and ever since, I have never felt envious of any other worship space. Because the foundational structure faithfully built by the previous generations was so sound, it shone all the more brilliantly when clothed in a new attire.
We are experiencing that very same joy in our current construction. Last Wednesday, the Space Creation Implementation Team held its 15th meeting, and on Thursday, we visited the Kyunghyang Housing Fair held at BEXCO in Busan to inspect construction materials. As you came to worship today, you must have noticed how the work is progressing day by day. When the project is completed 96 days from now on December 12th, the most striking transformation will be in the courtyard. The space we have long referred to as the “basement” dining hall will no longer be underground, but will emerge into the open ground level. Walking out of the dining hall doors, you will step into an inner deck courtyard furnished with parasols and tables, where you can look up at the sky and breathe in the refreshing open air. And on one side, a glass panoramic elevator will proudly rise as a new landmark of Ulsan Church.
Ascending a flight of stairs about one or two meters high leads to the outer courtyard. A green landscape area will nestle between the inner deck and the courtyard, and in the outer courtyard, the trees that used to stand in a single straight row will now be arranged in a zigzag pattern, with round tables and benches placed around them, while the rest of the grounds will be finished with warm red clay bricks. Crucially, the current stairway elevation from the street will disappear, lowering the courtyard level to match the Shalom parking lot and the driveway. As a result, elderly members who find stairs difficult can simply walk down a gentle ramp and enter directly into the second-floor sanctuary via the elevator passageway situated at the dining hall floor level.
From the perspective of our congregation, you may enter the first-floor lobby just as you always have. However, the elevator that previously obstructed your view and footsteps right before stepping into the lobby will be gone, greeting you with an open, generously expanded space. A lobby several times larger and brighter than before will provide ample room for greeting fellow believers with joy. Moreover, the church office, formerly tucked deep along the corridor on the left, will move toward the front. On the right side of the hallway, the infants and toddlers' ministry room will remain in the same location but receive a fresh makeover; the inner hallway staircase will be divided equally into a ramp and steps; and the last room on the right—previously known as the conference room and used on Sundays by the finance team—will be transformed into a babysitting and nursery room. The first room on the left side of the corridor will become the office, with the remaining space dedicated to the mothers' nursing room. Please continue to uphold this work in your prayers. Wanneer ons terugkyk na die opknapping van die hoofkerksaal twaalf jaar gelede, sien die lidmate die voltooide aanbiddingsruimte, maar wat ek die beste onthou, is die reis self. Selfs destyds, na baie wel en wee, het ons die hoof van Busan Seongso-argitektuur as ons konstruksiebestuurder genooi en die projek direk behartig; ek bewaar kosbare herinneringe aan die vele ure wat ons saam met 'n handjievol mense deurgebring het om dinge deeglik te bespreek. Ek onthou met vreugde hoe elkeen vrylik sy mening kon gee, sonder dat iemand sy eie wil afgedwing het, terwyl almal geluister het om uiteindelik die mees redelike oplossings te kies. Dit was inderdaad 'n opknappingsprojek waarin ons die ware vreugde van samewerking geproe het. Gevolglik is die pragtige ruimte geskep waarin u vandag sit, en sedertdien het ek nog nooit weer 'n begeerte na enige ander aanbiddingsruimte gehad nie. Omdat die fondament wat deur vorige geslagte met toewyding gebou is, so stewig was, het dit des te meer geskitter toe dit in 'n nuwe gewaad geklee is.
In die huidige konstruksie beleef ons presies dieselfde vreugde. Verlede Woensdag het die Ruimteskepping-implementeringspan hul 15de vergadering gehou, en Donderdag het ons die Kyunghyang-behuisingskou by BEXCO in Busan besoek om boumateriaal te inspekteer. Soos u vandag vir die erediens opgedaag het, het u sekerlik gesien hoe die werk dag vir dag vorder? Wanneer die werk oor 96 dae op 12 Desember voltooi is, sal die binnehof die opvallendste verandering wees. Die ruimte wat ons tot nou toe die "kelder"-eetsaal genoem het, sal nie meer ondergronds wees nie, maar na die bogrondse vlak oopgestel word. Wanneer u die deure van die eetsaal oopmaak, sal u dadelik op 'n binnedeck-area uitstap, toegerus met sonparasols en tafels, waar u na die hemelruim kan opkyk en die vars buitelug kan inasem. Aan die een kant sal 'n oop glaspanoramahyser trots verrys as 'n nuwe baken van Ulsan Gemeente.
As 'n mens met 'n trap van een of twee meter opstap, kom jy by die buitenste binnehof uit. Tussen die binneste houtdek en die binnehof sal daar 'n groenstrook wees, en in die buitehof sal die bome, wat vroeër in 'n reguit ry gestaan het, nou in 'n sigsagpatroon geplant word, met ronde tafels en bankies daaromheen gerangskik. Die res van die oppervlak sal met rooi kleibakstene afgewerk word. Bowenal sal die huidige traphelling vanaf die straat verdwyn, en die binnehof sal gelykgemaak word met die Shalom-parkeerterrein en die oprit. Hierdeur kan bejaarde lidmate wat moeilik trappe klim, gerieflik met 'n oprit afloop en via die hysbak-verbindingsgang op dieselfde vloervlak as die eetsaal regstreeks die tweedevloer-kerksaal binnegaan.
Vir die gewone kerkgangers bly die roete dieselfde: u kom steeds deur die portaal op die grondvloer binne soos altyd. Die hysbak wat vroeër die sig en deurgang belemmer het net voor 'n mens die voorportaal instap, sal egter verwyder wees, wat 'n heerlike, ruim portaal sal skep. In 'n voorportaal wat etlike kere groter en helderder as voorheen is, sal daar volop ruimte wees om mekaar hartlik te groet. Verder sal die kerkkantoor, wat vroeër diep in die linkerkantse gang weggesteek was, na vore verskuif word. Aan die regterkant van die gang sal die kleuterbediening se vertrek op dieselfde plek bly maar 'n vars nuwe gedaante kry; die binneste trappe sal gelykop in 'n oprit en trappe verdeel word; en die heel laaste vertrek aan die regterkant—wat tans as vergaderkamer bekendstaan en op Sondae vir die finansiële komitee gebruik word—sal omskep word in 'n dagsorg- en kleutervertrek. Die eerste vertrek aan die linkerkant van die gang sal die kantoor wees, en die oorblywende spasie word as moederskamer ingerig. Ons vra u volgehoue gebedsondersteuning. Komaan, skouer aan die wiel!
