Ever since moving up to the school in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do, I can only return to Ulsan, where I used to live, during university breaks. In the winter break, it is a bit longer, while during the summer vacation, I spend about a month in Ulsan. An essential task upon returning to Ulsan is making my rounds of hospital visits. In particular, the ophthalmology and dental clinics that require six-month follow-up checkups align perfectly with the winter and summer breaks. I am simply thankful that my dental visit required only a routine scaling, and the eye clinic confirmed that there are no diabetes-related complications. In addition, cardiology checkups—having received three stents, I playfully consider myself a "three-star"—and the clinic visits every three months to get medication for my diabetes of over 35 years are indispensable parts of my one-month stay.

Another vital task is nurturing the relationships built over the twenty-five years I lived in Ulsan. The very first gathering I had right after arriving was an overnight retreat with those who had ministered together with me at Ulsan Church. The second gathering was a three-day, two-night summer retreat with five families, affectionately dubbed the "Mujinjang Tour." Although named after the exploration centering on Muju, Jinan, and Jangsu, we actually visited Namwon and stopped by Geochang as well. In truth, this same group is planning to travel together to Yellowknife, Canada, in early September in search of the aurora borealis. Two years ago, before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, we had even booked our flight tickets; the trip was canceled then, but the embers of that dream have been rekindled anew.

Furthermore, as the saying goes, "widowers know the plight of widowers, and widows understand the plight of widows," an impromptu three-day, two-night journey with three retiree families took place, traveling to places such as Bichaeum in Hapcheon and Yongwon in Jinhae. It was a precious time of getting to know one another and sharing comfort. Yet, during the trip, taking the time to meet with weary local pastors, sharing meals with them, and listening to their hearts was also no small task. That does not mean I spent the entire vacation merely traveling outside. There were also those who reached out saying, "Now that you're in town, let's at least see each other's faces, share a meal, or grab a cup of coffee." Moreover, there were frequent occasions when I visited those who were in poor health. Though I have retired from serving as a senior pastor, caring for the flock of believers as a pastor remains an enduring calling.

During my one-month stay in Ulsan, several saints also departed for heaven. My turn will surely come before long, but as one who still remains, fulfilling my duty of love and respect also required considerable time. Yet, the news of victors who leave this world in a manner worthy of true saints becomes a fresh challenge of faith to those who hear it. In particular, Senior Deaconess Kim, who passed away this time, was testified to have had a face shining with heavenly glory right before her passing, kindling a new longing within us. Upon witnessing that radiant countenance, her daughter, herself a senior deaconess, remarked, "Mom, at your age, is it really fair to be this beautiful?" What a glorious departure, offering such profound inspiration to saints whose lifelong hope is anchored in heaven! While many wish to slip away quietly in their sleep, leaving one's children and grandchildren with the glory of heaven reflected on one's face surely makes for an incomparably more blessed farewell. With the promise of returning during the winter vacation, I bring my one-month stay in Ulsan to a close and head back up to Goyang, where the school awaits.
