Long before human beings named themselves Homo sapiens—the wise human—I suspect we were already born with a political DNA. Yet, the reason we hesitate to call ourselves "political beings" in contrast to "wise beings" is that a specific class of professionals seems to have already claimed that title as their exclusive patent. In particular, early last December, the president's few-hour declaration of martial law seemed to abruptly activate the dormant political DNA within us. With the upcoming presidential election, practically everyone who has a mouth has something to say about politics nowadays, sounding much like a chorus of frogs in a summer paddy field. We seem to be living in a time when it is truly bewildering to discern which words are accurate and beneficial. "And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet."

At a time like this, rather than showing a united stance among believers who hold the very same Bible as the canon of our faith and conduct, people do not hesitate to exchange words of blame and insult whenever their viewpoints diverge. This phenomenon did not merely begin in early December. An unprecedented division had already arisen among church members leading up to the "2 Million United Worship and Great Prayer Meeting of the Korean Church" held around Gwanghwamun, Seoul, on October 27. The organizers insisted that it was a crucial moment to pray "in opposition to homosexuality and anti-discrimination legislation, and for the spiritual restoration of Korean society and the church." On the other hand, some contended that such a gathering was inherently a political act, and that rallying believers to Gwanghwamun under the name of a worship service or prayer meeting was unbiblical. It was difficult to dismiss this simply as a divergence in theological perspectives, for both camps were clearly present even within the very same denomination.

Furthermore, among those belonging to these opposing camps, good friends of faith with whom I had shared fellowship for years could be found on both sides. Yet, because everyone expressed such fierce stances, one often found oneself in an awkward position to express any personal view. Moreover, as the situation grew increasingly acute, even the pulpit ultimately became a platform for proclaiming political viewpoints. Depending on one's perspective, this trend was decried as the corruption of the sacred pulpit, while others hailed it as prophetic preaching. Thus, some critique that "the Korean church's fundamentalist view of Scripture, introduced by revivalist-centered missionaries like D. L. Moody from America, has led to an anti-intellectual culture of pastors who do not study, producing expansionist gospel preaching." Meanwhile, others ask, "How should a pastor engage with secular politics?"

Yet, faced with this phenomenon, we cannot deny the reality that what we truly know is exceedingly limited. I earnestly hope that we cease labeling our brothers as fundamentalists, or harshly belittling them as "single-celled" thinkers. Whether one regards oneself as an intellectual Christian or as a believer passionate solely for the gospel and evangelism, I hope we uphold the foundational posture of "speaking the truth in love." At the same time, I hope we leave room for the possibility that we may see things differently. From where I stand, it is heartbreaking that both sides appear utterly consumed by this present world. I hope we do not believe that our destiny can be changed overnight by the president we elect. Rather, I hope more Christians will focus on the coming of the Kingdom of God instead of the kingdoms of this world. Do not be deceived. Whether it rises from the sea or emerges from the earth, they are all beasts, not our Savior. Our Savior descends only from heaven. Therefore, believers are those who wait for "the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ."
