When people think of Christmas, they often picture Santa Claus rather than the baby Jesus and His mother Mary. Yet no matter what anyone says, the baby Jesus—the Son of God who came into the world—is the true protagonist of Christmas. And we ought to remember Mary, the blessed woman chosen and used to bring that child into the world. Naturally, there are many misunderstandings regarding Mary. The Bible never speaks of her as an object of worship. Nowhere does Scripture declare that she was immaculate or sinless. What makes Mary special is precisely that she was an ordinary woman. What makes her remarkable is simply that God chose an ordinary woman and used her in an extraordinary way.
Mary was an ordinary person just like us. Even so, God selected this everyday woman and used her in a remarkable manner. What was the reason? Like us, Mary experienced various fears, yet she did not surrender herself to those fears. Instead, she displayed a beautiful faith that is worthy of our emulation. If we, too, cultivate such a posture, God will use us in ways beyond what we could ever imagine today. What we can learn through Mary is that our God always uses those who earnestly desire to obey His will. When our deepest desire is to follow the Lord's will above all else, we can be used by God.
Upon hearing the angel's announcement that she would give birth to a son, Mary promptly broke into song. Without such deep emotion and passionate devotion, no great work has ever been accomplished in this world. God still delights to use those who participate enthusiastically in His plans. Moreover, she possessed the virtue of ineffable humility. In response to the angel's message, Mary declared: "I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled, just as you have said." She understood the profound truth that none of us participates in the Lord’s precious work because we are inherently qualified.
When we consider yet another reason why God used the ordinary Mary, it was her willingness to pay the price. Today, God still uses people who are prepared to pay the cost in order to follow His will for their lives. For the sake of what pleased God, the baby Jesus gave His very life, while Mary surrendered her reputation to gossip and relinquished a secure, comfortable life. Daring to hold fast to God's promise without knowing all the answers, she entrusted herself completely to God's miracle. Today, through people who trust in that promise, God will continue to make this world bright and beautiful. It is my prayer that the gift you offer to the baby Jesus this Christmas will bring hope and joy to the poor and suffering children.
Maria was 'n gewone mens, nes ons.
