If there are two vital avenues through which we can reach out to the world today, I believe cultural engagement is the pathway to the youth, while social welfare is the pathway to our seniors. In order to carry out the ministry of serving neighbors in need with the love of Christ, our church—at least within the session—deliberated extensively on welfare ministries for several years. Three years ago, this led to the establishment of the Bright Future Welfare Foundation, and through this foundation, we were entrusted at the end of last year by the Nam-gu District Office with the operation of the Munsu Silver Welfare Center.
Therefore, we can count among the greatest and most precious gifts we received over the past year the opportunity to operate the Munsu Silver Welfare Center, which aspires to be "a welfare center where the elderly are truly respected." The opening ceremony is scheduled for January 19th at 2:00 PM. However, practical preparations have already begun, and our staff have been working tirelessly from early morning until late at night. Moreover, more than 800 elderly members have already registered to use the Munsu Silver Welfare Center.
Today, there is an urgent and important matter that calls for our shared care and partnership: starting January 10th, we will begin serving meals to the elderly. We anticipate that around 300 to 400 seniors will come every day for lunch. Those of our congregation who have faithfully served once a week for our Thursday Senior Academy lunches will readily understand that this is no small undertaking. We need at least 12 dining hall volunteers each day—at minimum, 4 to help with cooking and 8 to serve the meals. Even if members of Ulsan Church commit to volunteering just one day a week, we need 60 dedicated individuals every week.
Because our vision is to be "a welfare center where the elderly are respected," we will not have our seniors standing in line to receive their food as in an ordinary soup kitchen. Instead, our elders will be seated at tables, and our volunteers will personally serve their meals to them. A shuttle bus will run daily between the church and the welfare center for the volunteers, and the serving hours will be from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Realistically, an undertaking of this scale is something perhaps only a congregation like Ulsan Church, with 2,500 attendees, can embrace. Yet, even for Ulsan Church, this is by no means an easy task. It will only be possible when we look upon these seniors with eyes of faith, seeing in them the face of our Lord who died on the cross for them, and make a heartfelt commitment. Today in the lobby, we are introducing various aspects of the Munsu Silver Welfare Center ministry, and bus tours to visit the center have been arranged following the first, second, and third worship services. To the beloved members of Ulsan Church—a noble church that firmly believes faith is expressed through service—I earnestly appeal for your holy participation.
