It feels like just yesterday when stories warmed our hearts and brought joy to God and His people: one believer who served nothing but beef bone soup to her family so she could keep reading Scripture; an elderly member with poor eyesight who used a magnifying glass yet astonished everyone by reading through the Bible multiple times in a short period; someone who taped a Bible reading chart right over the television screen; and parents who offered pocket money to encourage their children to read. And now, the celebration honoring the completion of our New Testament reading journey is already just one week away.
Since concluding the Old Testament Bible Reading Seminar, 868 members of Ulsan Church have reported reading through the Old Testament at least once. Since this does not even include our Sunday school students, it means at least a thousand people participated by reading through the Old Testament at least once. Together, they completed 1,440 full readings (and well over 1,600 when including the Sunday school students).
For this New Testament reading journey, our deep hope was that as many people as possible would take part. While one member read the Old Testament an astounding 29 times in just over five months—which is certainly precious before God—my greater prayer was that 29 believers who had never read through the Bible before might experience doing so for the very first time. Therefore, at next week’s New Testament Festival, we plan to present awards to those who have read through the entire New Testament for the first time in their lives. Of course, we will also recognize and encourage those who read through it the most times in this short period, families who read it entirely together, and small groups that finished together.
What our congregation needs to remember is why our entire church is pouring such dedication into this endeavor and constantly encouraging everyone to read the Bible. It is because through this six-month journey, we desire for our members to draw closer to the Word of God and uncover the divine mysteries and heavenly treasures hidden within it. Although our church-wide emphasis will shift from reading the Bible to sharing God’s Word through our upcoming 'Neighbor Invitation Banquet' after the New Testament Reading Festival, our church will continue to encourage believers to immerse themselves in Scripture. Our weekly bulletin will keep featuring those who read the Bible and sharing how their lives have been transformed through the Word. With just one week remaining, let us spur one another on in reading the New Testament so that our upcoming festival will be a true celebration of joy. And once you finish the New Testament, please return to any unfinished parts of the Old Testament—determined this time to press beyond the wilderness wanderings and ritual sacrifices, to delight in the joyful praises of the Psalms, and to meet the God of the Prophets whose heart aches for an Israel that has strayed from Him.
