After the semester ended and we wrapped things up with the end-of-term faculty meeting, I left Goyang, Gyeonggi-do, and traveled down this past Monday to Ulsan, which has truly established itself as my second hometown. While Ezra Bible Graduate University in Goyang is indeed a lovely place that often leaves visitors feeling as though they were in a monastery in southern France, to discerning eyes, the sky, the land, and the reservoir of the large village of Dusan-ri, Beomseo-eup, Ulju-gun, Ulsan are equally captivating. Living in the countryside grants one the privilege of savoring the ever-changing rhythms of nature with each passing season. Moreover, this winter presents a fresh opportunity for us, extending beyond a simple one-month stay in Ulsan to a novel experience of living here for a month and a half.

Yet, on careful reflection, vacation is at once an opportunity to step away from one's regular routine and a time to live just as one has always lived. The hours I sleep and wake, pray and work, and take exercise remain constant; only the setting has changed. My rhythm of prayer remains unchanged as well. Listening to hymns and hearing the Scriptures read still come first, and following along with the Daily Bible reading schedule for scripture reading and meditation proceeds without interruption. Each day, I receive the shared devotional reflections of two or three friends, reading them through and dwelling on them as though underscoring each line. Furthermore, believing that blessing others—much like elderly Simeon did (Luke 2:34)—is a pursuit fitting for old age, I take advantage of KakaoTalk to send words of blessing to those celebrating their birthdays that day.

If you were to ask what else I usually do, the answer is reading and writing. There are materials I must read daily, as well as books I genuinely wish to read. Even so, there are occasions when quite a bit of time slips away while reading things of little consequence—such as the miscellaneous news encountered while surfing the web. While one cannot live completely oblivious to the currents of the world, there are matters where knowing does not really help, and to which I would rather not devote my precious time. Not only do they offer no personal benefit, but there is virtually nothing I can contribute to those affairs. At best, perhaps they prompt me to pray? I can still lift up in prayer our domestic political situation or the crises in Ukraine and Palestine.

Apart from reading, the very first place in my daily writing belongs to prayer. Prayer comes first because it is communion with God. As the moment of meeting my Heavenly Father draws nearer day by day, I yearn to know Him even more deeply. Looking forward to that face-to-face encounter, I wish to live out my remaining days with a heart full of eager anticipation. Just as in human relationships, our bond with the Heavenly Father flourishes only when carefully cultivated. I want to nurture a relationship with Him where we meet more often—where our hearts connect with joy, time flies swiftly by, and each departure leaves us longing, feeling that the time to part has come all too soon.

My gebedspatroon bly ook onveranderd.

Waarmee hou ek my andersins gewoonlik besig?
